Detailed Questions and Answers

1) Is kayaking difficult & do I need much experience?

No experience is necessary to participate in this kayaking tour. We take a relaxed pace with an emphasis on enjoyment and exploration.

2) Does your tour require a high level of physical strength & stamina?

No, a high level of physical ability is not necessary to participate. All we ask is that you are capable of a few hours of moderate exercise each day. We cater to the individual and the group as a whole to find an ideal activity level.

3) What qualifications do your guides have?

Our guides are trained and certified under the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of British Columbia with additional certification in Advanced Wilderness First Aid.

4) Do I need to know how to roll a kayak? Do they easily tip?

You do not need to know how to roll a kayak to participate on this tour. We give an on land safety briefing and fit each guest to the appropriate kayak. If you are concerned with stability choose a double kayak.

5) How dangerous is kayaking if you can't swim?

Swimming ability does not affect your ability to kayak. You will be provided with a PFD and appropriate gear and training to be safe on the water.

6) How far will we paddle each day?

We paddle an average of 5 to 10 miles per day. This depends on the ability and desire of the group.

7) Will there be big waves?

The Discovery islands offer world class paddling in sheltered waters. As we are not kayaking on an exposed coast the wave size will be minimal.

8) What if the weather turns bad?

We paddle rain or shine but expect a hot shower and dry clothes on our return. If you do not feel like heading out you are welcome to stay at base camp and just relax.

9) Are there age limits and can I bring my children?

The waters around the Discovery Islands offer a perfect sheltered environment for young kayakers. We suggest a minimum age limit of 12 years old. We are willing to customize for family trips.

10) What wildlife may I come across?

From sea birds to eagles, seals, sea lions, otters, porpoise, dolphins, and even the odd Orca and black bear. This is a very rich natural environment.

11) Does it rain a lot?

The summer months (June, July, August and Sept) are the driest months of the year in BC. The weather is generally beautiful but we cannot always guarantee sunshine. Prepare for all weather and just hope the rain gear never gets unpacked!

12) Are there a lot of bugs?

Bugs are not really a concern. Covering up in the evening and or applying some repellant is very effective if you are sensitive. If you are highly allergic, packing an epi-pen is suggested.

13) What kind of kayaks will we be using?

We use fiberglass sea kayaks, singles and doubles are available.

14) What kind of meals will be served?

Hearty gourmet fare. Local salmon, fresh local prawns, beef and poultry, organic garden vegetables & greens, home baked goods and yummy desserts!  Real strong organic coffee for those early mornings... We can offer vegetarian meals with advanced notice

15) Do I bring my own beverages?

We offer complimentary wine with dinner and encourage BYOB. Non-alcoholic beverages & plenty of water are provided throughout your stay.

16) Is there electricity?

There is no electricity in the cabins or tents, but we will be happy to charge any batteries for you in our home.

17) What do I bring on this tour?
